BACKGROUND OF THE ZHAIMAI (LIYAI) BAPTIST CHURCH
The Zhaimai (Liyai) Baptist Church was instituted in the year 1947 at Liyai Khullen Village. The village is situated in the North-eastern part of Senapati District, Manipur, India. It is 33 km away from the national highway No. 2 (Tadubi). The village was once the bastion of primal religion until Christianity was introduced by Kholi Puni from Mao Punanamei Village. With great determination and effort, he converted five families into the Christian faith. He established a Baptist church in the village with 21 people, in which Ngaopunii Hriikhanii was chosen to be the first pastor of the Church. The first five converts rendered their time for the Lord’s ministry. They served as pastor, deacons and leaders of the church. They worked whole-heartedly to convert the non-Christians into Christianity. The church, thus, grew continually through the help of God and in the year 1997, celebrated its Golden Jubilee with the theme “Christ the Redeemer”. During that time, the Church’s population was 914, with 157 households, and 386 baptized members. The church celebrated its 75th Anniversary on 1st Feb. 2022 with the theme “Jesus is the Answer”. The population of the Church as of 2022 was 1564 with 365 households and 761 baptized members.
The Zhaimai (Liyai) Baptist Church follows a congregational polity in which individual members have equal authority under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. The government of the church is vested solely in the body of baptized believers who compose it (1 Pet. 2:9). It is subjected to the control of no other ecclesiastical body or secular institutions. It however recognises and sustains the obligation of mutual fellowship, counsel and cooperation with other Baptist churches.
The Church cooperates with and support the Poumai Naga Baptist Association (PNBA) in the principles adopted, accepted and espoused by the Association which is in harmony with the theological doctrines and principles of “The Church”(Eph.4:4-6)
